Our newest Make a STATEment nominee John Jaramillo Sr. holds the position of Director of Administrative Services at New Mexico Children, Youth, and Families Department (CYFD), which provides an array of prevention, intervention, rehabilitative, and after-care services to New Mexico children and their families. Jaramillo has been with CYFD for almost two years and says that he chose this position because he knew the work the department does would impact children. “Children are our most precious resource. And at CYFD we strive to make New Mexico a better place for children. I enjoy serving in a capacity that has the ability to make true change for children,” says Jaramillo.
Jaramillo is no stranger to working for the betterment of children’s welfare. When he decided to exit a 16-year career with NASA years ago he pivoted toward his education degree and a teaching job with the Las Cruces School District working with at–risk children. “It was very rewarding,” he states. His career took him through several other organizational and state positions, but when the opportunity came up to work with CYFD he says he jumped at the chance. “I was thrilled to join CYFD and have a more children-centric mission.”
When Jaramillo’s name was submitted for consideration for the Make a STATEment program, the background information stated that he was especially worthy due to his commitment to mentoring and leadership. “I think it is a wonderful compliment that someone spoke of my leadership skills. I think anyone can manage but it takes more to lead people on a path that the upper echelon of an organization has set, and follow that path and mission wholeheartedly. Our mission moves the needle on the well being of the children. It is very powerful.”
Jaramillo is honored to receive this recognition from State ECU. “I feel truly emotional. I am extremely honored that someone would nominate me in this way; it is very special.”
