This year, show your appreciation to the mothers, grandmothers or other maternal figures in your life by making it a uniquely New Mexican Mother’s Day. Break out of boring brunch routines and check out our round-up of unexpected ways to celebrate tu madre.
Commune With Nature
Spring is the perfect time to appreciate nature’s wonders, especially the incredible maternal instinct alive in the creatures around us. ABQ BioPark is celebrating Mom with Mother’s Day at the Zoo on Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Enjoy live music as you self-tour the zoo and learn how all the moms are raising their babies at the BioPark.
If she’s more into flora than fauna, Santa Fe Botanical Garden is hosting Community Day on Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm for New Mexico residents and students to enjoy a free day among the gardens to learn and explore our biodiversity.
Maybe your mom isn’t a fan of the crowds. To stray off the beaten Mother’s Day path, consider exploring New Mexico’s quieter state parks, enchanted geology, or healing hot springs.
Go Big (Then Go Home)
Is it time to show your mom your appreciation for her in a big way? Instead of your usual brunch, consider a mini-getaway together or sending her on her own New Mexican vacation. The town of Red River, New Mexico is hosting its 20th Annual Mother’s Day Concert, a three-day long musical celebration held at the Red River Conference Center and Park in the mountains of northern New Mexico.
A grand gesture sure to make all your siblings question their ‘favorite child’ status would be to get Mom a stay or spa treatment at Los Poblanos, the historic Albuquerque inn and organic farm famous for its lavender.
Take mom for a stroll along the Santa Fe Plaza and let her pick out a little something for herself from the jewelry and art vendors before enjoying a meal or cup of tea at the Teahouse Santa Fe that boasts a wine bar, beer garden, and specialty wholesale tea store.
Hide in the Dark
You know what moms really like? Sitting in a climate controlled, calmly lit room while eating snacks, being entertained, and having zero responsibilities. Get your mom (or mother of your children) out of the New Mexico heat and into the air conditioning for a movie of her choice. Whether enjoyed with family, friends, or deliciously solo, this could be the respite she didn’t realize she was craving. It just so happens that Book Club 2 starring Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton premiers this Mother’s Day weekend. Another holiday-appropriate choice would be the currently-in-theaters Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret, the film adaptation of the beloved coming-of-age Judy Blume novel.
Modern Mamas
Create your own traditions to celebrate your bond with mom. Boxing Bear Brewing Company is hosting its 2nd Annual Mama Bear Market featuring local vendors, food, and brew from 11 to 5 pm on Saturday May 13.
For musical moms, Saturday, May 13 is Mamas Let Your Babies Grow Up to be DJs, featuring some of the best Albuquerque House and DNB talent starting at 8 pm at JUNO brewery + café + art.
A truly unique experience, Strings in the Woods Santa Fe is hosting a guided nature walk, meditation and live music picnic as the sun sets on Mother’s Day.
We hope that no matter how you celebrate your mom, you’re able to be together to enjoy the culture and environment that make us New Mexico. If nothing else, share a favorite food or drink and ask your mom to tell you a story from her youth that you’ve never heard before. Just connecting with each other can be the greatest gift of all.
